And we're off...

Last I wrote about the journey of handling/training for Perfect Fit Canines. The process to get Blue into the public and training took some time. First, I had to get letters of recommendation. I have some very wonderful friends and the cub scout organization,  Which I volunteer for, help me out. What a great group of people. We also have to make sure the pups are current on all vaccinations. The Staff and Vets at the VCA Northview Animal Hospital are super! Highly recommendable!! Next step is for Blue to receive his red vest and my handler/trainer ID. I have my copies of the Pa law (as well as OH and WV) and I'm on my way to socializing Blue in the public setting.

Blue's first outing was to a cub scout den meeting. I was working with my den on their disability belt loop. I got a chance to inform the boys on the purpose of a service/therapy dog and that not all people may look like they have a disability. We typically see service dogs for Blind people or people in wheelchairs. So it was very nice to get the chance to bring up Autism and the awareness. The boys LOVED Blue!! He got lots of love and attention. After my den meeting was over, Blue had a chance to meet with the Boy Scouts. Everyone wanted to see Blue. He has since attended two other scout functions and is very comfortable and welcome.

Next outing was to introduce Blue to South Side Elementary School. I went to pick Nate and Chloe up when school lets out at 3:05. He was a perfect gentleman. Walked in with me, no hesitation and sat at my feet (rather laying) The kids were so shocked to see a pup in the school. "Ohh My" and "Look a puppy" and the biggest one, "Can I pet him?" This is a great experience for Nathan, my son with Autism. He is not a social child at all. This gives him a chance to speak up and answers questions the kids may have and educate other on his disability. So, Now I'm Nathans "cool" mom who has the dog, Blue.

Those were easy outings. Next came the doctor appointments and stores. I utilized my sisters therapy appointment to socialize Blue. I walked in and sat down. Blue followed and listened to command. Not a very social group in the waiting area. So, I didn't have to give the rundown on where, what and why. Next, time to go back. The therapist picked the tiniest room ever!! So Blue literally sat on our feet and he kept eying the therapist's new black high heels... Hehe... it was a major distraction!! He wanted to chew and lick and eat those pumps!! He sat for 40 mins and then got ancy. I walked him outside  a few blocks for a change of pace and off to the next location.

WALMART!!! My favorite store!!! (insert sarcasm) I was super nervous. I opted to go in at the lawn and garden entrance. Leashed up Ol Blue and off we went. Walked up to the greeter and he didn't even look at Blue. Hmmm okay... So, I proceeded to go about my shopping. No sooner did I turn the corner, the greeter tapped me on the shoulder, "Excuse me, is that a service dog?" Yes, Sir it is. He said, "Okay" and walked away. Super nice guy. I kept our trip short and stayed on the no-food side. We will tackle that after more training. Food distractions are a weakness for Blue.

I'm also required to take Blue to training glasses twice a month. We started our puppy class last week. For a newbie he did great!! We went through lots of treats and worked on a ton of obedient skills. There was a lot in a short amount of time. Now, I practice what was taught at class for 30 mins a days at home. I'm happy to say, he has mastered sit, down, stay and come. Heal is what I'm having issues with. But I'm confident that he will master that soon as well.
